The prestigious 4-star, Big 5 Aquila Private Game Reserve, just outside Cape Town, was nominated as a finalist in the Luxury Game Lodge category at the World Luxury Hotel Awards at a prestigious black tie gala event on Friday evening in Cape Town.
States owner and founder of Aquila Private Game Reserve, Searl Derman: “It’s a great honour to know that we’ve been recognised by the industry not only for our exceptional facilities and service excellence, and unique Big 5 educational experience but also acknowledged for our various conservation and community upliftment initiatives.”
Derman recently hit the international media spotlight when he learnt of the conservation wildlife emergency on Robben Island and called in his specialist staff from the Animal Rehabilitation Centre (ARC), a non-profit organisation based at Aquila Private Game Reserve, dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and involved in various research projects, funded by Aquila.
Within hours Derman had arranged with the islands management to ferry over vital food that he purchased at his own expense such as game licks, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and highly concentrated vitamin and molasses concentrates for the starving fallow deer.
The 300 or so fallow deer on Robben Island are now in a much healthier condition after receiving the weekly supplementary feeding to the value of over R300 000 donated by Derman throughout the winter and the second phase of the rehabilitation process is due to commence.
